What custom game modes have completely changed how you play certain games?

I'm always testing new tech gadgets and games, and one thing that keeps me coming back to older titles is when the community creates amazing custom game modes. Things like Prop Hunt in Garry's Mod or various zombie survival modes in different games.
What custom game modes have you tried that completely transformed a game for you? I'm especially interested in modes that add new mechanics or change the core gameplay loop in creative ways. Have you found any that made you feel like you were playing a completely different game?
Custom game modes in Garry's Mod are absolutely transformative. Things like Trouble in Terrorist Town and Prop Hunt completely change the social dynamics of the game. It's not just about shooting anymore, it's about deception and deduction.
Also the various zombie survival modes in different games. The DayZ mod for Arma 2 basically created the entire survival genre. That one custom game mode spawned dozens of standalone games.
The custom game modes in Minecraft are endless. Things like Hunger Games, Bed Wars, and various parkour challenges have kept that game fresh for over a decade. Some servers have entire ecosystems of custom game modes that feel like completely different games.
Also the modded game modes for games like Terraria and Starbound add so much content and new mechanics they might as well be sequels.
I love how custom game modes can make old games feel new again. The various challenge modes people create for games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring add so much replayability. Things like randomizer mods or specific challenge runs completely change how you approach the game.
Also the cooperative mods for games that weren't originally designed for co op. Playing through single player games with friends thanks to custom game modes is a whole new experience.
From a technical perspective, some of the most interesting custom game modes are the ones that modify game physics or mechanics at a fundamental level. The various hardcore" mods for games that add survival mechanics, needs systems, or more realistic damage models.
Also the total conversion mods that turn one game into another. Like turning Skyrim into a survival horror game or GTA into a police simulator. Those custom game modes show what's possible with creative modding.
The custom game modes for racing games are super interesting too. Things like drift competitions, time attack challenges, or even completely new racing formats. Some communities create entire racing leagues with custom rules and scoring systems.
Also the roleplaying game modes for games like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2. Those custom game modes create entirely new social experiences that the developers never intended.
