What causes EV range drop in cold weather: normal loss or battery degradation?
#1
So I’ve been driving my EV for about a year now and I’m starting to wonder about something. My daily commute is pretty short, but I took a few longer trips this winter and noticed the range dropped more than I expected, even after pre-conditioning. I keep hearing about battery degradation but I’m not sure if what I’m seeing is just normal cold weather stuff or the start of that gradual capacity loss everyone mentions.

I get how that feels. You expect steady range and winter can make it drop more than you expect. Battery degradation or not it still stings to see the numbers change.

Cold weather slows the chemistry inside the battery and heating can pull extra energy so a longer trip reveals more loss than a short one. That can feel like battery degradation but sometimes it is temperature and load.

Maybe you are measuring the wrong thing the gauge you see when you pre condition may not reflect usable energy once you start moving and the car uses heat and traction so it looks like battery degradation but it might be weather and load.

I am skeptical that a year of use in a modern EV shows real battery degradation. You would expect the pack to hold up and the losses are usually weather or charging habits not a sudden decline.

Maybe the frame should shift to the whole system not just aging The car is juggling weather HVAC and charging patterns so the numbers shift for reasons beyond simple battery degradation.

Have you checked the car app for pack health or a degradation trend and compared it to the official spec Does the trend line up with the cold season observations?

Sometimes battery degradation is real and other times cold and usage mask the truth.
