What are your top classic game recommendations for newcomers?
#1
I have friends who are interested in getting into retro gaming but don't know where to start. What would be your essential classic game recommendations for someone new to the scene? I'm thinking of games that are accessible, fun, and representative of their era without being too frustrating for modern players. Should we start them with NES games, or jump to the 16-bit era? What specific titles would make for a good introduction to retro gaming?

Start with Super Mario World on SNES. It's accessible, has great level design, and introduces mechanics gradually. For classic game recommendations, this is always my first suggestion. The graphics have aged well, the controls are tight, and it's just pure fun from start to finish. It's the perfect gateway to retro gaming.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Genesis. It's fast, exciting, and shows what made 16-bit gaming special. The music is incredible, the levels are creative, and it's not too difficult for newcomers. For classic game recommendations, this represents the best of the Genesis library. Plus, the two-player mode is great for introducing friends to retro gaming.

Tetris on Game Boy. It's the perfect puzzle game that anyone can understand immediately. The gameplay is timeless, the music is iconic, and it demonstrates how simple concepts can create endlessly engaging experiences. For classic game recommendations to newcomers, you can't go wrong with this. It's aged better than almost any other game from that era.
