What are your most effective character development tips?
#1
Character development is one of the most challenging aspects of fiction writing for many writers. We want characters who feel real, who grow and change, and who readers care about.

I've collected various character development tips over the years, but I'm always looking for more. What specific character development tips have you found most effective?

Some common advice includes:
- Giving characters flaws and contradictions
- Understanding their motivations
- Creating detailed backstories
- Showing character through action rather than description

But I'm interested in the less obvious character development tips. For example, one technique I use is writing letters from my characters' perspectives, even if they never appear in the story. Another is imagining how different characters would react to the same situation.

What character development tips have helped you create more compelling, three-dimensional characters? I'm especially interested in practical exercises or approaches that go beyond the basics.
