Prototyping is such a crucial part of game development that often doesn't get enough attention. I've experimented with many different game prototyping techniques over the years, and I've found that different approaches work better for different types of games.

Some of the most effective game prototyping techniques I've used involve rapid iteration and focusing on core mechanics rather than polish. The goal is to test ideas quickly and cheaply before committing to full development.
