What are your best reduce waste tips for beginners?

I have friends who want to start reducing waste but feel intimidated. What are the simplest, most effective reduce waste tips you'd give to someone just starting out? I'm looking for things that don't require major lifestyle changes or expensive purchases.

As a beginner myself, here are the reduce waste tips that actually worked for me without being overwhelming:

1. Start with ONE reusable item and use it consistently. For me it was a water bottle. Master that before adding more.

2. Meal plan just 3 dinners a week. Reduces food waste and impulse buys.

3. Use what you have first. Don't go buy all new eco" stuff - use up your current products.

4. Learn what's actually recyclable in your area. Contamination makes recycling less effective.

5. Say no to single-use items when you can. "No straw please" or "I don't need a bag" are easy starts.

These small steps add up and build confidence for bigger changes.

Great beginner tips! I'd add:

- Start a zero waste kit" with just 3 items: reusable bag, water bottle, container. Keep it by the door.

- Focus on reducing food waste first - it's often the biggest source of household waste and saves money too.

- Learn to repair one thing. Maybe sewing a button or fixing a loose handle. Repair culture reduces waste dramatically.

- Shop your pantry/fridge before buying more. We often have food we forget about.

- Use digital receipts when possible. Saves paper and is easier to organize.

The most important tip: don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Reducing waste by 50% is better than giving up because you can't do 100%.
