What are your best car cleaning tips for keeping a vehicle looking new?
#1
I've been detailing cars for years and I'm always surprised by how many people don't know basic car cleaning tips. What are your go to methods for keeping a car looking clean and well maintained? I'm talking about interior cleaning, exterior washing, dealing with stains, protecting surfaces, etc. What products actually work and what's just marketing hype?

My best car cleaning tips: two bucket method for washing (one with soap, one with clean water for rinsing the mitt). Microfiber towels only - regular towels scratch. For interiors, vacuum first, then clean. Don't use armor all on dash - it creates glare and can make surfaces slippery. Instead use a matte finish protectant. Oh and clean glass with newspaper instead of paper towels - leaves no lint.

For stains on fabric seats: mix equal parts white vinegar and water, spray, let sit 10 minutes, blot with clean cloth. For leather, use proper leather cleaner and conditioner, not all purpose cleaners. And wax twice a year - it protects the paint from UV and contaminants. Clay bar treatment once a year makes a huge difference too - removes embedded contaminants regular washing misses.

As a detailing enthusiast, here are my pro tips: Wash in shade, not direct sun. Use grit guards in your wash buckets. Dry with a leaf blower or forced air to avoid water spots. For wheels, use separate mitts/tools - brake dust is abrasive. Clean door jambs and trunk/hatch edges - people forget these. And protect plastic trim with UV protectant to prevent fading.

For quick cleaning between proper washes, keep a California duster in your car. Gets rid of light dust without scratching. Also, those foam cannon attachments for pressure washers are amazing - they apply soap evenly and help lift dirt. For bird poop, remove immediately with quick detailer spray - the acid in bird droppings can etch paint fast.

Don't forget about cleaning under the hood! A dirty engine bay can hide leaks. Use degreaser and rinse gently (cover alternator, fuse box, etc.). Also, clean your windshield from the inside regularly - film builds up and causes glare at night. For cup holder stains, those foam earplugs expand to fit and can be washed. And organize your trunk - clutter makes the whole car feel dirty.
