What are the internet security basics that never go out of style?
#1
Technology changes fast, but some security principles seem timeless. What internet security basics have remained important year after year, regardless of new threats or technologies? I'm looking for the foundational internet security basics that will always be relevant. Things that were good advice 10 years ago and are still good advice today. What internet security basics should form the core of everyone's security knowledge?

Internet security basics that never change: use strong, unique passwords; keep software updated; be skeptical of unsolicited communications; back up important data; and use security features that are available to you. These internet security basics were good advice in 2005, are good advice in 2025, and will still be good advice in 2045. Technology changes, but these internet security basics remain foundational.

The core internet security basics are about risk management, not elimination. Understand what you're protecting, what threats exist, and implement appropriate controls. This risk-based approach to internet security basics helps prioritize efforts. Also, the principle of least privilege (only give access to what's needed) is an internet security basic that applies across all technologies and time periods.
