As much as I love Nintendo, I think Sega had some absolutely incredible retro Sega games that often get overlooked in these discussions. The Genesis/Mega Drive had a fantastic library that still holds up remarkably well today.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is obviously a classic, but I think games like Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes, and Phantasy Star IV are just as essential. The Genesis had this raw, energetic feel to its games that was really different from Nintendo's more polished approach.
