I've been playing through a bunch of retro platformer games lately, and I'm struck by how important tight controls are for this genre. Some games from the 80s and 90s still feel amazing to play, while others are frustratingly imprecise by modern standards.
For me, Super Mario Bros. 3 is the pinnacle of NES platforming. The controls are responsive, the physics feel just right, and the level design is brilliant. On the 16-bit side, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 still feels incredibly fast and fluid, even compared to modern platformers.
What are your favorite retro platformer games that you think still control perfectly today? I'm especially interested in hidden gems or games that might not get as much attention as the Mario and Sonic titles.
