What are the best bodyweight leg exercises for building muscle without weights?
#1
Leg day is my favorite but I struggle with bodyweight leg exercises that actually challenge me after the beginner phase. Squats and lunges get too easy. What advanced bodyweight leg exercises do you recommend for building serious leg muscle without any equipment? I'm looking for home exercise circuits that really burn and build. Also curious about minimalist fitness approaches for legs specifically.

For advanced bodyweight leg exercises, try pistol squats with a pause at the bottom. That changes everything. Also, shrimp squats are killer - they look easy but destroy your quads. For glutes, single-leg glute bridges with your foot elevated on a chair. I incorporate these into my home exercise circuits and my legs have never been stronger, even compared to when I used heavy weights at the gym.

Don't forget about tempo! Regular squats become brutal if you do 5-second descents. I do 5x5 squats with 5 seconds down, explosive up, 2 second pause at top. Same with lunges. This approach to no equipment workouts has given me better muscle growth than just adding reps. For home workout routines focused on legs, controlling the eccentric is everything.

Bulgarian split squats using a chair or bed are my go-to for legs. They're adjustable by how far you step out, and you can add tempo or pauses. For calves, single-leg calf raises with a full range of motion. I do them off a step if available, otherwise just the floor. These bodyweight leg exercises have completely eliminated my need for leg equipment.
