What are the basic principles of quantum computing?

I'm trying to understand quantum computing but the concepts seem very abstract. What are the fundamental quantum computing principles that make it different from classical computing? I know about qubits and superposition, but how do these actually enable quantum computers to solve certain problems faster? What are the main challenges in building practical quantum computers? And what kinds of problems are they expected to be good at solving?
