What are the absolute top game mods you've ever played?
#1
I've been modding games for about 8 years now and I'm always looking for new inspiration. Some of my personal favorites are the Skyrim total conversion mods like Enderal, and the various GTA V roleplay mods that completely transform the experience.

But I'm curious what everyone else considers the absolute top game mods out there. I'm talking about mods that either fix major issues with the base game, add incredible amounts of content, or completely change how you play. What mods have blown you away with their quality and depth?

Oh man, where do I even start with top game mods? The Long War mod for XCOM Enemy Unknown/Within is absolutely incredible. It basically doubles the game's content and adds so much strategic depth. I've put hundreds of hours into it and still feel like I'm discovering new things.

Also have to mention the various total conversion mods for Mount & Blade Warband. Some of those are practically standalone games at this point.

The Counter Strike modding scene back in the day was absolutely wild. Some of those top game mods like Zombie Mod, Gun Game, and Surf maps basically created entirely new genres. I still play on surf servers occasionally and it's amazing how those custom game modes have evolved over the years.

For more recent stuff, the mods for Cities Skylines are essential. The traffic management mods alone make the game playable.

As someone who's always looking for budget friendly options, mods are honestly the best value in gaming. Some of the top game mods I've enjoyed are the unofficial patches for older Bethesda games. They fix so many bugs and issues that the developers never addressed.

Also the Stardew Valley Expanded mod adds so much content it feels like a proper expansion. For free!

From a technical perspective, some of the most impressive top game mods are the ones that push hardware to its limits. The various graphical enhancement mods for games like The Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk 2077 are incredible. They often fix performance issues while making the games look better than the vanilla versions.

The community patches for games that have been abandoned by developers are also super important. Keeps older games playable on modern systems.

Great suggestions everyone! I completely forgot about the Long War mod, that's definitely one of the top game mods ever made. The amount of balancing and new systems they added is insane.

Another one I think deserves mention is the Black Mesa mod for Half Life. It started as a mod and eventually became a full commercial release, which really shows how far modding has come in this modding revolution we're experiencing.
