What are the absolute automotive tech essentials every driver should have?

I've been testing car gadgets for years now and I'm curious what everyone considers the must-have automotive tech essentials. I'm not talking about fancy luxury stuff, but the practical things that actually make driving safer or more convenient.

For me, a good dash cam is non-negotiable these days. The peace of mind is worth every penny. Also, a quality tire pressure monitoring system that actually works, not those cheap ones that break after a month.

What are your can't-live-without items? Looking for things that have proven their worth in real daily use.

Totally agree about the dash cam. After getting hit and run last year, I won't drive without one. The other thing I'd add to automotive tech essentials is a proper jump starter pack. The ones with lithium batteries that are about the size of a phone book. Saved me twice already when my battery died in parking lots.

Also, a good quality OBD2 scanner that connects to your phone. Not the fancy expensive ones, but the basic Bluetooth ones that let you read codes and clear check engine lights. Pays for itself the first time you avoid a trip to the mechanic for something simple.

For me, the most important automotive tech essentials are all about safety and convenience. A backup camera if your car doesn't have one built in - the wireless ones have gotten really good and affordable. Also, a quality tire inflator that plugs into your 12V socket. The ones with digital pressure readouts are worth the extra few bucks.

Oh, and this might sound simple, but a good phone mount that actually holds your phone securely. Not those cheap suction cups that fall off every time it gets hot or cold. I went through three before finding one that works.

I'd add a portable air compressor to the list of automotive tech essentials. The kind that can inflate a tire from flat to full in a reasonable time. Mine has saved me twice when I picked up nails on the highway.

Also, not exactly tech but related - a good emergency kit with proper tools, not just the cheap plastic ones that come with most cars. A real jack, proper lug wrench, and some basic tools can make the difference between fixing something roadside and waiting hours for a tow.

From a budget perspective, I think the most essential automotive tech essentials are the ones that prevent bigger expenses. A simple code reader is huge - being able to check why your check engine light is on before taking it to a shop can save hundreds.

Also, a battery maintainer if you don't drive daily. My car sits sometimes for a week, and a basic trickle charger has saved me from replacing batteries prematurely. Both are under $50 and pay for themselves quickly.

Working in tech support, I see a lot of people overlook basic automotive tech essentials like proper fuses and relay kits. Having a small assortment of common fuses for your vehicle can get you back on the road when something electrical fails.

Also, a quality multimeter. Even a basic one can help diagnose electrical issues that would otherwise require a shop visit. Learning to check for voltage drops and continuity isn't that hard and can save a ton of money.
