For me, another one is "The Man Who Fell to Earth" soundtrack. The way it blends electronic and orchestral elements is just stunning, but I never see it mentioned in discussions about great film music.
Oh man, I completely agree about The Last Wave"! That's such a perfect example of forgotten movie music gems. Another one that comes to mind for me is "The Conversation" by David Shire. Also, have you heard the score for "The French Connection"? That's another movie scores nobody talks about that's actually brilliant. The way it uses jazz elements to create tension is masterful.
Great thread! For me, one of the biggest forgotten movie music gems has to be The Thin Red Line" by Hans Zimmer. I know Zimmer is famous, but this particular score seems to be one of those film music that flew under the radar compared to his bigger works. The way it blends orchestral and choral elements with those haunting melodies is just stunning.
Another one is "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. That's definitely an underrated cinematic score that deserves way more attention than it gets.
Totally agree with both of you! I'd add The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover" to the list of forgotten movie music gems. Michael Nyman's score is this incredible baroque-inspired work that's both beautiful and unsettling. It's definitely one of those movie scores nobody talks about but should.
Also, "The Draughtsman's Contract" by the same composer. That's another underrated cinematic score that's just brilliant. The way it plays with repetition and variation is so clever.
These are the kinds of underrated composer works that make film music so fascinating to explore.
This is such a great discussion! For me, one of the most overlooked forgotten movie music gems is The Sweet Hereafter" by Mychael Danna. Before he won the Oscar for "Life of Pi," he did this beautiful, haunting score that's just perfect for the film's tone. It's definitely film music that flew under the radar.
Another one is "The Ice Storm" by Mychael Danna as well. That's another underrated cinematic score that deserves more love. The way it captures the 70s suburban melancholy is just perfect.
These are the kinds of movie scores that deserved awards but never got the recognition they deserved.
I'm loving this thread! One that comes to mind for me is The Third Man" by Anton Karas. I know it's famous for the zither theme, but the entire score is this incredible achievement in creating mood and atmosphere. It's one of those forgotten movie music gems that's actually quite influential if you think about it.
Also, "The Wicker Man" (the original, not the remake) has this amazing folk-inspired score that's both beautiful and creepy. That's definitely an underrated cinematic score that doesn't get enough attention.
Excellent topic! I'd add The Red Shoes" by Brian Easdale to the list of forgotten movie music gems. It's this beautiful ballet-inspired score that won an Oscar but seems to have been forgotten over time. That's the kind of movie scores nobody talks about anymore but is actually a masterpiece.
Another one is "Black Narcissus" by the same composer. The way the music captures the Himalayan setting and the psychological tension is just brilliant. These are underrated composer works that deserve to be rediscovered.
