What are some easy simple kitchen DIY projects for beginners?
#1
Hey everyone, I'm looking to spruce up my kitchen without spending a fortune or needing advanced skills. I've seen some amazing simple kitchen DIY projects online but I'm not sure where to start. What are some of the easiest projects you've done that made a big difference? I'm thinking things like organizing solutions, decor upgrades, or even small furniture fixes. I'm pretty handy with basic tools but I don't have a workshop or anything fancy. Any suggestions for simple kitchen DIY that won't take weeks to complete?

Oh I love simple kitchen DIY projects! One of my favorites that made a huge difference was adding under cabinet lighting. You can get those LED strip lights pretty cheap online and they just stick on with adhesive. No wiring needed if you get the battery operated ones. It completely changed the feel of my kitchen and made cooking at night so much easier.

Another super easy one is making your own spice rack. I just got some cheap wooden crates from a craft store, stained them, and mounted them on the wall. Total cost was maybe $20 and it cleared up so much counter space.

What's your kitchen layout like? That might help with more specific suggestions for simple kitchen DIY projects.

I've done a bunch of simple kitchen DIY stuff over the years. My absolute favorite was creating a pot lid organizer. I had all these lids just piled in a cabinet and it drove me crazy. I took a tension rod and installed it vertically in the cabinet, then the lids slide right in between the rod and the cabinet wall. Took maybe 15 minutes and cost like $5.

Another good one is painting your cabinets if they're looking dated. Sounds intimidating but if you take your time with prep work (cleaning, sanding, priming) it's totally doable. I did mine over a weekend and they look brand new.

For really simple kitchen DIY, you could start with something like making custom drawer dividers from cardboard and contact paper. Super cheap and it helps so much with organization.

I'm also just starting with simple kitchen DIY projects and honestly I was surprised how much I could do with basic skills. My first project was making a magnetic knife strip. I bought a piece of wood from the hardware store, sanded it smooth, stained it, and then glued strong magnets to the back. It looks professional and keeps my knives organized and safe.

Another easy one that made a big difference was adding hooks inside my cabinet doors for measuring cups and spoons. They were always getting lost in drawers, but now they're right there when I need them.

I'm actually looking for more simple kitchen DIY ideas too, so following this thread!

Thanks for all the great suggestions! My kitchen is pretty standard layout with cabinets on two walls and an island in the middle. The under cabinet lighting sounds perfect because it does get dark in the corners when I'm cooking.

The pot lid organizer is genius! I have that exact problem with lids everywhere. Do you think a tension rod would work in a cabinet that's about 18 inches wide?

I'm a bit nervous about painting cabinets but maybe I'll start with just the island to see how it goes. What kind of paint did you use for yours?

These are exactly the kind of simple kitchen DIY projects I was hoping for. Not too complicated but they make a real difference in how the space functions.

For cabinet painting, I used a cabinet specific enamel paint from Sherwin Williams. It's more expensive than regular paint but it holds up so much better to cleaning and wear. Definitely worth the investment for simple kitchen DIY projects that you want to last.

The tension rod should work fine in an 18 inch cabinet. Just make sure you get one that's adjustable and can extend a bit beyond 18 inches so it stays tight. You might want to put a small piece of felt or rubber on the ends so it doesn't scratch the cabinet walls.

Another simple kitchen DIY idea I just remembered: if you have deep cabinets where things get lost in the back, you can add slide out shelves. They sell kits at home improvement stores that are pretty easy to install. Game changer for accessing pots and pans!

Yeah 18 inches should work fine for the tension rod. I'd recommend getting one that goes up to 24 inches just to be safe. The pressure is what keeps it in place.

For painting, I actually used Behr cabinet paint from Home Depot and it's held up really well for 2 years now. The key is in the prep like I mentioned. Clean with TSP substitute, sand lightly, use a good primer, then multiple thin coats of paint. Don't rush the drying time between coats.

Slide out shelves are amazing but they can get pricey. A cheaper alternative for simple kitchen DIY is just using those plastic bins or baskets on the shelves. You can pull out the whole bin to access what's in the back. Not as fancy but works almost as well for way less money.
