What’s the best way to pick between Figma and Sketch for our team?
#1
I’m a junior designer at a small marketing agency, and we’re finally moving our UI/UX work off of static Photoshop files. The team is split down the middle on whether to standardize on Figma or Sketch. The whole Figma vs Sketch debate is all anyone talks about, and I’m supposed to help make a recommendation. I’ve tried both, and I like Figma’s collaboration in the browser, but our senior designer swears by Sketch’s plugin ecosystem and performance with large files. I’m worried that whichever we choose, we’ll lock ourselves into a workflow that might be hard to change later, especially with new hires who might be used to the other tool. It feels like a bigger decision than just picking software.

Totally get the crossroads. For a small team the impact is on workflow not chasing every feature. Figma shines with real time collaboration and cloud libraries which helps onboarding and scaling. Sketch remains fast and has a strong plugin ecosystem but it is Mac only and can fragment workflows.

Don't underestimate the risk of vendor lock in. Choosing Figma locks you into their platform for components and tokens and choosing Sketch can leave you chasing updates.

A practical path is to codify a shared design system first with components tokens and a central library. Both tools can export assets and work with code friendly formats so you stay portable if you switch tools.

Pilot plan run a two week test with one project in the chosen tool and a small sample in the other to compare handoff speed version history clarity and asset export reliability.

If your team prefers cross platform access and quick sharing you may lean toward Figma. If the group loves powerful plugins and offline work Sketch has staying power. Base the decision on your current makeup and hiring plans.

Think long term a design system and design tokens help you stay consistent across tools so you dont get derailed by changes.

I can draft a simple one page decision guide that maps needs workflows and a recommended path. Would you like me to draft it?
