What’s the best way to lube switches for a smoother, deeper sound?

I'm deep into the custom keyboard rabbit hole and I'm about to lube my first set of switches. I've watched a ton of videos on mechanical keyboard switch lubing, but I'm still nervous about overdoing it or getting lube on the wrong parts. For someone going for a smooth, slightly deeper sound, is it better to err on the side of too little lube and add more later, or is a thorough initial coating the way to go?
