What’s a simple way to see real constellations and asterisms beyond star maps?

I was looking at some old star charts the other night and realized the constellation outlines seem almost arbitrary to me now. I know they’re based on ancient patterns, but with my modern sky map app, I just see a scatter of stars. Does anyone else struggle to see the actual pictures, or have you found a trick to it?
