Underrated weekend getaways for quick escapes
#1
I don't always have time for long vacations, so I'm always looking for underrated weekend getaways that offer a quick escape from daily life. Places that are close enough for a short trip but still feel like a proper vacation.

Recently I discovered this charming little town about two hours from where I live. It has great restaurants, cute shops, beautiful hiking trails, and a really relaxed vibe. It's become my go-to spot for when I need a break but can't take time off work.

What underrated weekend getaways would you recommend? I'm looking for places that are perfect for a 2-3 day trip and offer that feeling of getting away without traveling too far.

For underrated weekend getaways, I love the Hudson Valley in New York. It's only a couple hours from NYC but feels like a different world. There are beautiful towns like Hudson and Rhinebeck with great restaurants and antique shops, hiking trails with views of the river, and historic sites like Olana and the Roosevelt homes. In the fall, the foliage is incredible. You can stay in charming inns or B&Bs, and it's perfect for a relaxing weekend away from the city. It's underrated because most people think of the Hamptons or Cape Cod for East Coast getaways, but the Hudson Valley is just as beautiful and less crowded.

I'll recommend the Texas Hill Country for underrated weekend getaways. It's beautiful rolling hills with wildflowers in spring, wineries, and charming German-influenced towns like Fredericksburg. You can go tubing on the rivers, visit natural swimming holes like Hamilton Pool, and eat amazing barbecue. The wildflowers in spring are spectacular, and in fall, you can pick peaches and apples. It's underrated because most people think of Texas as flat and dry, but the Hill Country is green and hilly and feels completely different from the rest of the state.

For underrated weekend getaways on the West Coast, I love the San Juan Islands in Washington. You take a ferry from Seattle or Anacortes and arrive in this peaceful archipelago with beautiful views, whale watching, and charming towns. Friday Harbor on San Juan Island has great restaurants and shops, and you can bike around the island or kayak in the waters. Orcas Island has beautiful Moran State Park with hiking and views. It's underrated because most people go to the more famous islands like Vancouver Island or the Gulf Islands, but the San Juans are just as beautiful and feel more remote.

I'll add the Berkshires in Massachusetts to the list of underrated weekend getaways. They're beautiful mountains in western Massachusetts with great hiking, charming towns like Lenox and Stockbridge, and cultural attractions like Tanglewood (summer home of the Boston Symphony) and the Norman Rockwell Museum. In fall, the foliage is spectacular, and in winter, there's skiing. It's underrated because most people from the Northeast go to Vermont or New Hampshire, but the Berkshires are just as beautiful and often less crowded. The food scene has gotten really good too, with farm-to-table restaurants and craft breweries.

For those in the Midwest, I recommend Door County, Wisconsin as an underrated weekend getaway. It's a peninsula between Green Bay and Lake Michigan with beautiful coastline, charming towns, cherry orchards, and wineries. You can go hiking in state parks, visit lighthouses, eat fish boils (a local tradition), and browse art galleries. It's underrated because most people from the Midwest go to the more famous lake destinations like Mackinac Island or the North Shore of Minnesota, but Door County is just as beautiful and has its own unique character.
