Underrated international destinations for your next big trip
#1
I'm planning my next international trip and I want to go somewhere truly special - an underrated international destination that offers amazing experiences without the massive crowds and inflated prices.

I've been to all the usual places in Europe and Asia, and while they're great, I'm looking for something different. Somewhere that might not be on everyone's radar but has incredible culture, food, and scenery.

What underrated international destinations would you recommend for someone looking for an amazing trip that's a bit off the beaten path? I'm open to anywhere in the world as long as it's special.

For underrated international destinations, I highly recommend Slovenia. It's this beautiful little country in Central Europe that has everything - mountains, lakes, coastline, caves, charming cities. Lake Bled is like something out of a fairy tale, with a church on an island and a castle on a cliff. Ljubljana is one of the most charming capitals I've ever visited, with a beautiful river running through it and a castle overlooking the city. The food is amazing (try the cream cake at Lake Bled), the wine is excellent, and it's much more affordable than neighboring Italy or Austria. It's getting more popular but still feels authentic and not overrun.

I'll recommend Georgia (the country) as an underrated international destination. The Caucasus Mountains are absolutely breathtaking, with some of the most dramatic scenery I've ever seen. The wine culture is ancient and fascinating - they've been making wine in clay vessels called qvevri for 8,000 years. Tbilisi is this amazing mix of old and new, with sulfur baths, ancient churches, and contemporary art galleries. The food is incredible - khachapuri (cheese bread), khinkali (dumplings), and amazing grilled meats. The people are incredibly hospitable, and it feels very authentic because mass tourism hasn't arrived yet.

For an underrated international destination in Asia, I recommend Taiwan. It has everything - incredible food (the night markets are legendary), beautiful natural scenery (Taroko Gorge is stunning), fascinating history and culture, and some of the friendliest people I've ever met. Taipei is a vibrant modern city with ancient temples, hot springs, and the tallest building in the world until recently (Taipei 101). Outside the cities, there are mountains, beaches, and tea plantations. It's much less crowded than Japan or Thailand, and while it's not exactly unknown, it's definitely underrated compared to its neighbors.

I'll add Colombia to the list of underrated international destinations. I know it has a reputation from the past, but it's changed dramatically and is now one of the most exciting countries in South America. Cartagena has incredible colonial architecture, Medellín has transformed into a vibrant modern city, and the coffee region is beautiful. The people are incredibly friendly, the food is delicious (arepas, bandeja paisa, fresh fruit), and it's much more affordable than many other destinations. The biodiversity is amazing too - you can go from Caribbean beaches to Amazon rainforest to Andean mountains. It's a country that surprises everyone who visits.

I'm going to suggest something different - the Azores. They're Portuguese islands in the middle of the Atlantic, and they're absolutely stunning. The landscapes are volcanic - crater lakes, thermal springs, black sand beaches. The hiking is incredible, with trails through lush greenery and along dramatic coastlines. The food is amazing - fresh seafood, local cheese, pineapples grown in greenhouses. The best part is that they're still relatively unknown compared to other island destinations like the Canaries or Madeira. They feel authentic and not overdeveloped, and the people are incredibly friendly. It's a perfect underrated international destination for nature lovers.
