We talk a lot about specific comics and graphic novels, but what about the creators behind them? There are so many talented comic writers and artists who consistently put out amazing work but don't get the mainstream recognition they deserve.
Take someone like Daniel Warren Johnson - his work on "Murder Falcon" and "Extremity" was incredible, but I feel like he's still underappreciated. Or Tillie Walden, whose graphic novels like "On a Sunbeam" are breathtaking but maybe don't reach as wide an audience as they should.
Who are some underrated comic writers or artists you think more people should know about? I'm talking about creators who might not be household names but are doing some of the most interesting work in the industry right now.
Great topic! Daniel Warren Johnson is a perfect example of an underrated comic artist who deserves more recognition. His work on Murder Falcon" and "Extremity" is some of the most energetic, emotionally charged comics I've read. The way he balances crazy action with genuine heart is really special.
Another underrated comic writer I think more people should know about is James Tynion IV. He's been putting out consistently great horror comics like "The Nice House on the Lake," "The Department of Truth," and "The Closet." His worldbuilding is incredible and he has this knack for taking horror concepts and giving them real emotional weight.
For artists, Tillie Walden is absolutely brilliant. "On a Sunbeam" is one of the most beautiful graphic novels I've ever read. Her use of color and space is masterful, and she creates these quiet, emotional moments that just linger with you.
I think one of the most underrated comic writers working today is Ram V. His work on The Many Deaths of Laila Starr," "These Savage Shores," and "Blue in Green" is consistently brilliant. He has this poetic quality to his writing that's really unique, and he's not afraid to tackle big philosophical questions.
For artists, Filipe Andrade doesn't get enough recognition. His art on "The Many Deaths of Laila Starr" is stunning - it has this watercolor quality that's perfect for the dreamlike story. The way he uses color to convey emotion is really masterful.
Another underrated comic artist is Dani. Her work on "The Low, Low Woods" and "Wynd" is so expressive and atmospheric. She has this ability to create mood through her art that really enhances the storytelling.
From a storytelling perspective, I think Marjorie Liu is an underrated comic writer who deserves more recognition. Monstress" is one of the most ambitious comics being published right now - the worldbuilding is incredible and the characters are so complex. The fact that she's creating this epic fantasy with mostly female characters and getting away from traditional fantasy tropes is really impressive.
For artists, Sana Takeda's work on "Monstress" is absolutely breathtaking. The level of detail in every panel is insane, and she creates this beautiful art nouveau-inspired world that feels both familiar and completely original. I don't think she gets enough credit for how much she's elevating the art in that series.
Another underrated comic artist is Emil Ferris. "My Favorite Thing is Monsters" is drawn entirely in ballpoint pen to look like a child's notebook, and the amount of detail and emotion she packs into every page is just staggering.
From an academic standpoint, there are several comic creators who are doing really innovative work but don't get the mainstream recognition they deserve. Chris Ware is probably the most important cartoonist working today in terms of pushing the formal boundaries of comics, but I feel like he's still underappreciated outside of comics circles.
Another underrated comic writer is Nick Drnaso. Acting Class" and "Sabrina" are both brilliant explorations of modern anxiety and loneliness. His clinical, detached art style is perfectly suited to his themes, and the way he structures his narratives is really innovative.
For artists, the Hernandez Brothers (Jaime and Gilbert) don't get enough recognition for their influence on alternative comics. "Love and Rockets" has been running since the 1980s and it's one of the most important comics ever published, but I feel like it's still seen as niche when it should be considered essential reading.
I think one underrated comic writer who deserves more recognition is Brian K. Vaughan. I know he's popular, but I feel like his work doesn't get the critical respect it deserves. Saga" is one of the best comics being published right now - the worldbuilding, the characters, the emotional depth - it's all masterful. And "Paper Girls" was brilliant too.
For artists, Fiona Staples' work on "Saga" is incredible. The way she designs characters and creates these alien worlds that feel lived-in and real is just amazing. She doesn't get enough credit for how much she brings to that series.
Another underrated comic artist is Cliff Chiang. His work on "Paper Girls" was so good - he has this clean, expressive style that's perfect for character-driven stories. The way he conveys emotion through body language and facial expressions is really masterful.
