TurboTax alternatives that are actually good?

I've been using TurboTax for about 5 years now but I'm getting tired of their pricing games. Every year they seem to find new ways to charge more. I'm looking for solid Turbo Tax alternatives that won't leave me frustrated.
I have a pretty straightforward return - W-2, some investment income, mortgage interest, and charitable donations. Nothing too crazy.
What I really want is online tax filing software that's reliable and won't try to upsell me at every turn. I've heard mixed things about TaxAct software features and Credit Karma tax review results. Has anyone actually switched from TurboTax to something else and been happy with it?
I switched from TurboTax to FreeTaxUSA a couple years ago and haven't looked back. The interface isn't as flashy but it gets the job done without all the upsells. For investment income, it handles everything TurboTax did for me at about one-third the price.
What I like about FreeTaxUSA as a Turbo Tax alternative is that they're transparent about pricing. You pay for what you need, not for features you'll never use. Their deluxe version (which handles investments) is still cheaper than TurboTax's basic version.
If you want something with a more modern interface, Cash App Taxes is also good. Their Credit Karma tax review heritage shows in the clean design and lack of aggressive upsells.
In my professional testing, here are the best Turbo Tax alternatives I've found:
1. TaxAct - Similar features to TurboTax at about 60% of the price. Good TaxAct software features including investment import.
2. FreeTaxUSA - Basic but functional. Handles investments well in their paid version.
3. Cash App Taxes - Completely free, even with investments. Limited advanced features but fine for most people.
4. H&R Block - Actually comparable to TurboTax in features and price, so not really saving money.
The key with online tax filing software alternatives is to test them with your actual numbers before filing. Most let you go through the entire process and only pay when you file. Do this with 2-3 options and compare the final results and costs.
