Tips navigating SDCC exhibitor floor, artist alley, indie booths, offsite events

I'm planning my first trip to San Diego Comic-Con this year after finally securing badges, and I'm already overwhelmed trying to figure out a strategy. I know the major Hall H panels are a marathon of waiting, but I'm more interested in the smaller artist alley and indie publisher booths. For veterans of the con, what are your essential tips for navigating the exhibit floor efficiently, securing signings or portfolio reviews, and finding those unique off-site events that aren't part of the official schedule?

Do a dry run before you go: study the floor map, mark Artist Alley and indie publishers you want to hit, and plan a logical loop so you don't zigzag. Use the official app, turn on alerts for signings, and bring a portable charger, snacks, and a comfortable bag. Check bag size rules as well.

For signings or portfolio reviews: many creators have limited slots that fill fast. Bring a one-page bio and a small, printable portfolio sample. If they’re open to reviews, ask politely at the booth or DM ahead. Have a 30-second elevator pitch and know what feedback you want.

Off-site events: look for unofficial meetups on Twitter/X, Instagram, or the convention's Discord. Indie publishers sometimes host after-parties or gallery events within a short walk. Get there early, know the venue rules, and have a backup plan if it's full or requires tickets.

Logistics on the floor: wear comfortable shoes, stay hydrated, and schedule short breaks. Consider a simple route from one side to the other and avoid lugging heavy swag. A small, organized backpack helps keep sketches and swag safe.

Etiquette and lines: don't cut lines and be mindful of the staff working the booths. If you’re after a limited item, be patient and don’t block aisles. If you’re with a group, decide who’s waiting and who’s moving on to avoid chaos.

What kind of indie booths are you most hoping to discover? Are you into art prints, zines, or game studios? If you want, I can sketch a mini, crowdsourced hit list based on your interests.
