Should a beginner attempt DIY derailleur tuning and bottom-bracket service?
#1
I've been commuting on my gravel bike for about a year now, putting on roughly 50 miles a week, and I think it's time for some proper bike maintenance beyond just cleaning the chain. The shifting has gotten a bit sluggish, especially on the rear derailleur, and there's a persistent creaking noise coming from what seems like the bottom bracket area when I put power down. I have a basic multi-tool and some lubricant, but I'm not confident about adjusting the derailleurs or tackling a bottom bracket service myself. For those who do their own maintenance, is this something a determined beginner can learn from online resources, or should I just take it to my local shop for a tune-up? If I do attempt it, what specific tools would I absolutely need to buy?

Good plan for a beginner to tackle with a clear method and patience. Start with the rear derailleur by checking indexing then adjust the limit screws and test shifting. The creak could be bottom bracket or crank bolts so inspect and reseat those. If it feels risky a local shop can do a quick check and save you from costly mistakes in bike maintenance

Personal experience here I learned a lot by taking it slow and following a plan. A decent torque wrench and a proper chain tool helped me keep things aligned

Mildly skeptical you can learn it all from videos but with a bit of hands on practice you will build the right feel faster if you have an instructor or friend watch your first attempts

Casual reaction I tried a similar beginner friendly derailleur tune and it worked out but I took breaks to rethink steps and double check every bolt before riding again
