I've hit a major creative wall with my novel. I'm about 30,000 words into a fantasy manuscript, and my characters feel flat, just going through the motions of the plot. I think I need to step back and do some deep character exercises, but all the writing prompts I find online are either too generic ("write about a childhood memory") or overly specific to a genre I'm not writing. What are some effective creative writing prompts or exercises specifically designed to reveal hidden character motivations, flaws, and internal conflicts? I'm looking for something that can generate surprising insights, not just backstory.

Try the 'Question Jar' exercise to pry loose the hidden engine of a character. Write down 15 questions about beliefs, fears, loyalties, and what they'd never admit to themselves. Draw three random prompts and write a 900–1200 word scene where the character answers them in real time. The moment of conflict usually reveals motive you hadn't planned.

Core-conflict prompts: 1) outward goal vs. inner need (what they say they want vs. what they secretly want). 2) the 'wrong compass' scenario (someone persuades them to act against their moral code). 3) the 'costly choice' (they must choose immediate relief vs long-term integrity).
