Recommendations for underrated story-driven games with emotional impact

I'm looking for those hidden gem narrative games that really stick with you emotionally but somehow never got the recognition they deserved. You know, the kind of underrated story-driven games that make you think about them for days after finishing.

"Before Your Eyes" is one of those games that absolutely destroyed me emotionally but it feels like nobody talks about it. The blinking mechanic to control the narrative is genius, and it's definitely an underrated game of the year contender that flew under the radar.

What are some other narrative-focused games that have amazing stories but small player bases?

Before Your Eyes is incredible. Another hidden gem narrative game that destroyed me was What Remains of Edith Finch." I know it got some awards but it still feels like one of those best games nobody plays compared to mainstream titles. Each family member's story is so creatively told and the ending is absolutely heartbreaking.

Firewatch" is another one that comes to mind. The walking simulator genre gets a bad rap sometimes but Firewatch's writing and voice acting are absolutely top-notch. The relationship between Henry and Delilah feels so real and the mystery keeps you engaged throughout. It's definitely an underrated story-driven game.

Night in the Woods" is one of those games with a cult following that deserves way more attention. The characters feel so real and the themes of mental health, economic decline, and growing up are handled with so much care. The writing is funny, sad, and insightful all at once. It's a hidden gem narrative game that stays with you.

Gone Home" was revolutionary when it came out but I feel like it's been forgotten. The way it tells a story through environmental storytelling and audio logs is so effective. Exploring that empty house and piecing together what happened to your sister is such a unique experience. It's definitely an overlooked indie masterpiece.

All amazing suggestions. I'd add The Stanley Parable" to the list. The way it plays with narrative expectations and player agency is brilliant. The Ultra Deluxe edition added so much content but it still feels like one of those underrated game discoveries that more people should experience. The humor and meta commentary are perfect.
