I'm an instructional designer working on a new e-learning course for a complex technical subject, and I'm trying to apply cognitive load theory principles to structure the content effectively. I'm concerned about overwhelming learners with intrinsic load while also managing the extraneous load from the interface itself. For educators or designers who use CLT, what are your most practical strategies for segmenting information, designing worked examples, and integrating multimedia to optimize germane load without causing cognitive overload?

Nice goal. A practical start is to segment everything into micro-lectures (5–7 minutes max) that each cover one core idea. Pair that with a single worked example that you explain step by step. After learners can reproduce the first 2 steps, move to guided practice or a short simulation. Use a clear boundary marker (a header, color strip, or icon) to signal a switch to the next segment. Keep visuals minimal and tie every graphic to the spoken narration to reduce extraneous load.
