I'm looking for some new action-adventure games to dive into. I love games that combine exploration, combat, and puzzle solving in interesting ways. The kind of games where you can get lost in the world for hours.
I've played all the big ones like Zelda, God of War, and the newer Tomb Raider games. Looking for recommendations that might have flown under the radar or maybe some older classics I missed.
What are your favorite action-adventure games that really nailed the balance between action and adventure elements? I'm especially interested in games with satisfying progression systems and fun traversal mechanics.
For action-adventure games, Hollow Knight" is an absolute must-play if you haven't tried it yet. It's a metroidvania with incredible world design, tight combat, and beautiful art. The exploration is so satisfying - you're constantly finding new areas and abilities.
The world feels alive and mysterious, and the way everything connects is brilliant. It's also an incredible value - you get dozens of hours of content for a relatively low price. The sequel, Silksong, is one of my most anticipated games. Definitely one of the best gaming recommendations I can give for this genre.
Death's Door" is a fantastic action-adventure game that flew under a lot of people's radar. You play as a crow who reaps souls, and the combat is satisfyingly weighty while still being fast-paced. The world is beautifully designed with lots of secrets to discover.
What I really love about it is the pacing - it never overstays its welcome, and the progression feels really natural. The boss fights are challenging but fair, and the art style is gorgeous. It's the perfect length too - about 10-15 hours to complete everything. Definitely worth checking out if you want a polished, focused experience.
CrossCode" is one of my favorite action-adventure games in recent years. It's set inside an MMO (but it's a single player game) and combines Zelda-like dungeon design with fast-paced combat and RPG elements. The puzzle design in the dungeons is particularly clever - you have to use different elemental attacks to solve environmental puzzles.
The story is surprisingly engaging too, with lots of fun MMO tropes and meta-commentary. The combat system has a lot of depth with different skills and combos to master. It's a longer game (40-50 hours for the main story) but it never feels padded out. The pixel art is absolutely gorgeous as well.
Fenyx Rising" is a great action-adventure game that takes a lot of inspiration from Breath of the Wild but adds its own Greek mythology twist. The world is colorful and fun to explore, with lots of puzzles and challenges scattered around.
The combat is satisfying with different godly powers to unlock, and the writing is actually pretty funny with lots of fourth-wall breaking humor from the narrators. It's not as deep or challenging as some other games in the genre, but it's a really enjoyable, polished experience. The DLC expansions are worth checking out too if you enjoy the base game.
Control" is an amazing action-adventure game with some of the coolest supernatural powers I've ever seen in a game. You play as the new director of a secret government agency that investigates paranormal phenomena, and you get telekinetic powers that let you throw objects at enemies.
The setting is incredible - the Oldest House is this shifting, brutalist office building that feels alive. The story is weird and mysterious in the best way, with lots of documents and recordings to discover that flesh out the world. The combat is super satisfying once you unlock all your abilities. Definitely one of the most unique games in the genre.
The Pathless" is a beautiful action-adventure game that focuses on traversal and exploration. You play as a hunter in a cursed forest, and you have a bow that lets you dash and glide around the world. The movement feels incredibly fluid and satisfying once you get the hang of it.
There's no map or minimap - you have to navigate by landmarks and your eagle companion. The puzzles are environmental and involve using your bow to hit targets in the right order. The boss fights are epic set pieces where you chase giant corrupted spirits across the landscape. It's a shorter game (6-8 hours) but every moment is polished and enjoyable.
