Making volunteer community events rewarding

I'm organizing several volunteer community events this year and want to make sure volunteers feel appreciated and want to come back. What makes volunteer experiences truly rewarding beyond just "doing good"? How do you create a sense of community among volunteers during the event? What recognition or appreciation efforts have you found most meaningful? I want these events to build ongoing volunteer relationships, not just be one-time commitments.
