Maintaining closeness in an 18-month three-time-zone long-distance relationship.

My partner and I are about to start a long distance relationship for at least the next eighteen months due to a career opportunity on the opposite coast, and while we're committed, I'm anxious about maintaining a strong connection across three time zones. We've discussed regular video calls and planning visits, but I'm worried about the daily emotional gap and the practical strain it will put on us. For couples who have successfully navigated a similar situation, what specific routines or communication strategies helped you feel close and involved in each other's lives? How did you handle conflicts that arose when you couldn't be together in person, and are there any creative ways you found to share experiences or create intimacy despite the physical distance?

That distance thing is hard, but we found a few small rituals that work. We do a 15–20 minute video check-in at the same time every day, plus a quick chat message and a shared photo/journal to feel connected when we're apart.
