I'm a traditional artist trying to transition to digital 3D art. I need recommendations for easy 3D modeling software specifically for digital art creation. I'm not interested in animation or game development - just creating still 3D artwork. What are the most user-friendly options that won't take months to learn? I've heard about Blender but it looks intimidating. Are there simpler alternatives that are still good for artistic work?

It's designed with artists in mind and has a very intuitive touch interface. The learning curve is much shallower than traditional desktop software. You can create beautiful sculpts and paintings right away. For traditional artists transitioning to 3D, I'd suggest programs that feel more like working with physical materials. Sculptris (free) and its big brother ZBrush have that organic, clay-like feel that many artists appreciate. If you want something even simpler, try Medium by Adobe - it's VR-based but works on desktop too and has a very natural sculpting workflow. For non-sculpting work, SketchUp might be a good fit because it uses familiar drawing concepts. The key is finding 3D software for digital art beginners that doesn't force you to think like a computer programmer.

I came from traditional art too! What helped me most was starting with programs that use similar concepts to 2D art. For example, Substance 3D Modeler (formerly known as Adobe Medium) has a very painterly approach to 3D. Also, don't underestimate the power of good old Blender with the right add-ons and interface setups. There are artist-focused configurations that hide all the technical stuff and make it feel more like a creative tool. Look for Blender for artists" setups on YouTube - they transform the interface into something much more approachable for creative work.

If you have an iPad, Forger is another great option for easy 3D art creation software. It's specifically designed for artists and has a very intuitive interface. The gestures feel natural and you can create detailed sculpts without needing to learn complex menus. For desktop, I'd second the recommendation for Sculptris. It was literally designed to be the simplest possible introduction to digital sculpting. The developer (same as ZBrush) wanted to create something his artist friends could use without training. It's perfect for creating still 3D artwork without the animation/game dev overhead.

As a digital sculptor, I work with many artists transitioning from 2D to 3D. The most successful transitions happen with software that doesn't fight against artistic intuition. For this reason, I often recommend starting with VR sculpting tools like Google's Tilt Brush (now Open Brush) or Adobe's Substance 3D Modeler. The 3D space feels more natural when you're literally standing in it. If VR isn't an option, Blender with the Sculpting" workspace enabled is a good compromise. The key is to find easy 3D modeling software that lets you focus on art, not software.
