Looking for cheap flooring options for my living room renovation
#1
My living room flooring is looking really dated and I need to replace it, but I'm on a tight budget. I've been researching cheap flooring options and there are so many choices - laminate, vinyl plank, engineered wood, etc. What are the best budget-friendly flooring options that still look good and hold up well? I'm specifically looking for something that's easy to install myself since hiring someone would blow my budget. Any recommendations or experiences with different types of cheap flooring?

I recently installed luxury vinyl plank in my living room and it was one of the best cheap flooring options I've found. It looks like real wood, is waterproof, and was super easy to install as a DIY project. I got mine for around $2 per square foot at a home improvement store. The click-lock system means no glue or nails, just snap it together.

Laminate flooring is another great budget option. The newer versions are much more durable than they used to be and some even have waterproof cores now. I put laminate in my basement and it's held up really well. The installation is straightforward if you're moderately handy - you just need a saw and some basic tools.

Don't overlook sheet vinyl if you're really on a tight budget. The modern patterns are much nicer than what you might remember from years ago. I put some in my laundry room and it was under $1 per square foot. It's not as fancy as plank flooring but it's durable, easy to clean, and installs quickly.

If you have existing hardwood that's in okay condition, consider refinishing instead of replacing. Sanding and staining hardwood floors is labor intensive but the materials are relatively cheap. I rented a floor sander for a weekend and did my living room for under $200 in materials. It looks like new floors for a fraction of the cost.

Check out remnant sales at flooring stores too. Sometimes you can get really nice materials for cheap because they're leftover from larger jobs. I got enough engineered wood for my bedroom from a remnant that was 70% off. Just make sure you measure carefully to ensure you have enough.
