Looking for cheap animation programs that are actually good for students
#1
I'm a student and my budget is super tight. I need animation software for some class projects but I can't afford the professional suites. Are there any cheap animation programs that actually work well for learning? I've tried a couple free ones but they were either too limited or really confusing to use. Looking for something that's entry-level animation software but still has enough features to create decent projects.

As a student, you should check if your school offers any educational discounts. A lot of professional software like Toon Boom Harmony or Adobe Animate have student pricing that's way more affordable. I got Harmony Essentials for like 70% off through my university. It's still not exactly cheap but it's professional software at a fraction of the cost. If that's still too much, the free options others mentioned are definitely worth trying first.

Clip Studio Paint has a one time purchase option (not subscription) and it goes on sale frequently. The EX version has animation features and when it's on sale it can be under $100. That's still money but compared to subscription software it's a good deal. The learning curve is reasonable and there are tons of tutorials. For animation tools for students on a budget, it's worth considering if you can catch a sale.

I was in the same position last year. I ended up using a combination of free tools. Krita for drawing and frame by frame animation, and then DaVinci Resolve (free version) for compositing and adding effects. DaVinci Resolve has Fusion which is a node based compositor that can do some basic animation too. It's not ideal but when you're broke, you make it work. The key is to focus on learning principles rather than specific software.

If you're looking for cheap animation programs that are specifically designed for learning, check out Animation Paper. It's still in development but the early access version is affordable and it's being built by animators for animators. The interface is clean and focused on traditional animation principles. It's not free but it's reasonably priced for what you get. There's also a free trial so you can test it before committing.
