Is seeing a dermatologist for acne treatment worth it?
#1
I'm an adult still dealing with stubborn acne. Over-the-counter acne treatment hasn't worked for me. Is it worth seeing a dermatologist for prescription options, or are they usually just stronger versions of the same stuff?

Yes a dermatologist often offers prescription options when OTC acne hasn’t worked. citeturn1search0

OTC can help some, but persistent or more severe cases usually need a dermatologist to tailor prescription options. These can include stronger topicals like retinoids and benzoyl peroxide combos, topical antibiotics, azelaic acid, or hormonal therapies; for stubborn pimples a dermatologist may add a focused spot treatment plan. citeturn1search2

For severe or stubborn cases isotretinoin can be highly effective but it’s not a casual choice and is only available under strict iPLEDGE REMS because of pregnancy risks; you’d need regular checks and follow ups. citeturn1search4

If you go the clinic route you’ll likely try a mix of prescription topicals (retinoid plus cleanser or benzoyl peroxide) and possibly an oral option depending on severity; most people don’t see full results for several weeks to a few months, so plan for a multi month plan. citeturn1search0turn0search2

Bottom line in the US: see a board certified dermatologist to map a personalized acne treatment plan beyond pimple care sprays; you’ll likely get a clear plan with timelines and follow ups. citeturn1search2
