Is DIY brake pad replacement on a 2018 sedan feasible, or go with a shop?

I'm hearing a high-pitched squeal from the front of my car when I brake lightly, and my mechanic says it's time for a brake pad replacement. The car is a 2018 sedan with about 50,000 miles, mostly city driving. I'm trying to decide between doing it myself to save money or having a shop handle it. For those who have tackled this job, how difficult is it for a moderately handy person with basic tools? I'm particularly unsure about the process for compressing the caliper pistons, whether I need to replace the rotors as well (they have some light scoring), and what brand of pads you'd recommend for a good balance of low dust, quiet operation, and reliable stopping power. Are there any specific pitfalls or special tools I should be aware of before starting?

Brake work is safety‑critical, so if you’re not completely comfortable, a shop is the safest route. For a 2018 sedan with city miles, pads often wear down enough to cause squeal, and the rotors may be near minimum thickness. If you do DIY, expect to spend a couple of hours per axle the first time and invest in the right tools and a clean workspace.
