Is blockchain for art authentication actually working or just hype?

As someone who deals with art authentication regularly, I'm both excited and skeptical about blockchain for art authentication. I've seen some startups promising to use blockchain to verify authenticity, but how does this actually prevent forgeries? If someone creates a fake painting, they could still create fake blockchain records, right? Or am I missing something about how the technology works? Would love to hear from anyone who's actually implemented or used such systems.

As someone in the film industry, I've been watching the art authentication space closely because we face similar issues with media rights. The key with blockchain for art authentication is the physical-digital link. Some systems use NFC chips embedded in the artwork frame or special QR codes that can't be removed without damaging the piece. The blockchain just records the certificate of authenticity and ownership history.

I deal with luxury goods verification and we're looking at similar technology. The problem isn't creating the blockchain record - it's making sure the physical item matches the digital record. For high-value items, some companies are using microscopic patterns or DNA markers that are photographed and recorded on the blockchain. But this adds significant cost per item.

I'm skeptical too. The art world has always been about connoisseurship and expert opinion. Can blockchain for art authentication really replace centuries of tradition? Maybe for contemporary digital art it makes sense, but for physical paintings? I think it's more about creating a parallel market for blockchain verified" art rather than replacing traditional authentication methods.
