Is $450 for front brake pads in a 2018 Civic reasonable, DIY options?
#1
I drive a 2018 Honda Civic and I think it's time for new brake pads, as I'm starting to hear a slight grinding noise when I brake. I called my local dealership for a quote and they said the brake pad replacement cost would be around $450 for just the front pads, which seems incredibly high to me. I'm fairly handy and have done basic maintenance before, so I'm considering doing it myself. I've watched a few tutorials and it seems straightforward, but I'm nervous about getting the calipers right. For those of you who have done this on a similar car, is the dealership price typical, and how difficult is a DIY brake job for a beginner? I'd also appreciate any brand recommendations for pads if I go the DIY route.

Dealership price around 450 for front pads is believable but steep if you can DIY. With basic tools you can save a lot but take your time. Don't force the caliper back by hand. Use a proper piston tool or a big C clamp. Reassemble and torque to spec. Then test the pedal in a safe spot. Inspect rotors for wear and replace if needed.

DIY risk is real but doable. Take your time and double check the rotor and pins before bolting back on.

Brand picks like Akebono Bosch Wagner or Raybestos are solid options and many kits include the clips and shims you need.

Safety first use jack stands on a flat surface and work with the car cooled. If you feel unsure price a second quote to compare.
