How viable are RV hookups as backups to - electric vehicles charging stations?
#1
I'm planning a road trip through a region with sparse electric vehicles charging stations, and my strategy involves using campgrounds with RV hookups as backup charging points with a portable adapter. Has anyone else used this workaround, and what was your experience with compatibility and campground policies? I'm less worried about speed and more about reliable access.

That plan can work in a pinch but it is very campground and outlet specific The key is to call ahead and talk to the host about their policy and what outlets are actually usable for EV charging Some pedestals only supply 120 volts for small loads so be prepared for slow charging

Carry a true portable Level 2 charger and the right adapters so you can plug into a 50 amp outlet if available If you only get a 30 amp pedestal expect hours of charging Bring a watt meter and keep an eye on total draw to avoid tripping breakers

Ask about a maximum allowed charging time per stay and whether other campers have access to the same pedestal If the campground restricts charging your plan should include alternative chargers along the route

Use mapping tools like PlugShare to locate campgrounds where the staff explicitly welcomes EV charging and check recent reviews for how often outlets are working and how the power is managed Providing a plan B reduces stress

Log your experiences with dates and outlet types to build a small traveler friendly guide for future trips This can become a useful resource for others who need reliable access in rural regions
