I've been working as a cloud support engineer for two years, primarily with AWS, and I'm now aiming to advance my career by earning the AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate certification to move into a more design-focused role. I've started studying the official guide and taking practice exams, but I'm struggling to translate the broad service knowledge into the practical, scenario-based decision-making the exam is known for, especially around cost optimization and selecting between similar services. For those who have recently passed this exam, what study resources or strategies were most effective for mastering the architectural thinking required? Did you find hands-on labs, specific online courses, or a study group more valuable than just memorizing facts, and how much time did you realistically dedicate to preparation while working full-time?

You're not alone. For me the breakthrough was reframing the exam as architecture decisions, not feature memorization. Start a two-page cheat sheet that maps common workloads to AWS services and typical tradeoffs (cost, performance, security). Practice with real-world scenarios and justify each choice.

For cost optimization, study Savings Plans vs RI, EC2 sizing, auto scaling, S3 lifecycle and storage classes, data transfer costs. Study strategy: lean into scenario-based practice rather than memorizing features. Create a tiny repo: each entry is a scenario, an architecture diagram, the chosen services, and brief justification. Reuse and refine this as you learn. Plan for 3–5 hours/week for 8–12 weeks if you’re working full-time; more if you can. Take mock exams under timed conditions.

Huge win for me was hands-on labs that align with the exam domains. Build small end-to-end projects: API gateway + Lambda + DynamoDB; VPC with subnets; an S3-based data lake; a simple CI/CD pipeline with CodePipeline. Use infrastructure as code (CloudFormation or Terraform) to reinforce design thinking and reproducibility.

Study group and community help. Find a buddy or tiny cohort; meet weekly to review a set of questions and discuss tradeoffs. Use flashcards for service boundaries and pricing.
