How to review IC agreements for IP, liability, and non-compete as a designer?

I've recently started taking on freelance graphic design projects, and a potential client has asked me to use their standard independent contractor agreement, but after reviewing it, I'm concerned about clauses related to intellectual property ownership, indefinite liability, and a non-compete that seems overly broad for a short-term project. I don't have a legal background, and while I've found some basic templates online, I'm unsure which terms are standard and reasonable to protect my work and which are red flags that I should negotiate or walk away from. For other freelancers or solo practitioners, how do you approach contract reviews when you're not a lawyer? What are the key sections you always scrutinize or modify, and do you have a go-to resource or checklist you use to ensure your interests are covered without scaring off good clients by being overly adversarial in negotiations?
