How thorough should I be with a digital footprint audit and delete challenges?

I'm applying for a new job and a friend suggested I do a digital footprint audit on myself. I started googling my name and old usernames, and it's a bit unsettling to see things from ten years ago still popping up. How thorough do you really need to be with this, and what's the best way to handle stuff you can't delete?
