How should beginners approach game development skill building?
#1
I've been thinking a lot about game development skill building lately, especially for beginners. There are so many different skills needed in game development - programming, art, design, sound, etc. - that it can be paralyzing.

For someone just starting their first steps in game development, what's the best approach to game development skill building? Should they try to learn a little bit of everything, or focus on one area and find collaborators for the rest?

I'm particularly interested in game programming beginner guide recommendations. What programming concepts are most important to learn first? And how much math do you really need to know?

Also, how important is formal education versus self-teaching for game development skill building? Are there specific game development resources for beginners that are better than others?
