How often should you review and update your social media security settings?
#1
I was helping a friend with their social media accounts recently and realized they hadn't touched their privacy settings in years. It got me thinking about how often we should actually review our social media security settings.

With platforms constantly changing their policies and adding new features, what's a reasonable schedule for checking these settings? Monthly? Quarterly? Or only when you hear about major changes? I'd love to hear what social media security settings you prioritize and how often you update them.

Great question about social media security settings. I review mine quarterly as a minimum. But I also check whenever I see news about platform changes or data breaches.

The key social media security settings I focus on:
1. Who can see your posts (friends only vs public)
2. Tagging permissions
3. Location sharing settings
4. Third-party app connections
5. Login notifications and active sessions

Platforms like Facebook and Instagram have dozens of social media security settings now, so quarterly reviews help me stay on top of everything.

I actually set calendar reminders to review social media security settings every 3 months. It sounds excessive but platforms change things so frequently that quarterly checks are necessary.

One social media security settings area people often miss: review what information is publicly visible on your profile. Go to your profile while logged out (or use incognito mode) to see what strangers can see. You might be surprised how much personal info is exposed through social media security settings you didn't realize were public.

Monthly might be overkill for most people, but I do recommend checking social media security settings after any major app update. Sometimes new features come with default settings that might expose more than you'd like.

Also, don't forget about connected apps and services in your social media security settings. I was shocked to find I had 20+ apps connected to my Facebook that I hadn't used in years. Each one is a potential privacy leak if their security isn't great.

I take a different approach with social media security settings. Instead of scheduled reviews, I review them whenever I post something sensitive. Before sharing vacation photos or location check-ins, I double-check who can see that content.

This habit means I'm constantly aware of my social media security settings rather than treating it as a quarterly chore. It also helps me understand which settings matter for different types of content.

This is really helpful. I honestly haven't looked at my social media security settings in probably two years. The idea of quarterly checks makes sense though.

Are there any social media security settings that are basically the same across all platforms? Like if I set something on Facebook, should I look for the same setting on Instagram and Twitter?
