I've been seeing a lot of "boats for sale" listings lately that mention being pre-wired for a specific type of electric outboard conversion kit. It seems like a big selling point, but I'm wondering if it's actually a universal standard or if you get locked into one manufacturer's ecosystem. For anyone who's gone electric, how much of a factor was pre-wiring in your purchase decision versus doing a full retrofit yourself?

Not universal for sure Pre wiring is usually tied to the boat maker and the kit vendor You will see it offered on many used boats for sale but the harness and plugs vary between brands If you plan to go electric check the exact connectors and instructions before you buy

Here is how I would check Take photos of the stern wiring plan and the battery bank Look for label or part numbers on the harness and connectors See if the boat has a main kill switch and a clean battery isolator The more parts you keep from the original setup the easier the retrofit The reality is most people end up doing a retrofit if they have a specific brand in mind So ask the seller what pre wiring actually covers and if it is a true plug and play and what limits exist
