How does reading the manga change your view of the anime adaptation?

I'm caught up with the anime for my favorite series, but I'm getting impatient waiting for new seasons. I'm tempted to read ahead in the manga, but I'm terrified of running into major manga spoilers online. For those who've made the switch from anime-only to reading the source material, did it ruin the anime experience for you, or did knowing what was coming actually make you appreciate the adaptation more?
