How do you handle update troubleshooting effectively?
#1
Update problems seem to be getting more common. What's your approach to update troubleshooting? I'm dealing with everything from failed Windows updates to problematic driver updates to application update issues. What update troubleshooting steps do you take first? How do you use clean boot techniques during update troubleshooting to isolate the problem?

Update troubleshooting starts with checking Windows Update history. See which updates failed and what error codes they gave. Often the error code points to the problem. Common update troubleshooting steps: running Windows Update Troubleshooter, resetting Windows Update components (with commands like net stop wuauserv), clearing SoftwareDistribution folder, and checking disk space (updates need free space).

For driver update troubleshooting, I use Device Manager to roll back drivers if a new driver causes problems. Right-click the device, Properties, Driver tab, Roll Back Driver. If that's not available, you can manually install an older driver. For Windows updates that cause issues, you can uninstall them from Installed Updates in Control Panel. Sometimes waiting for a newer update that fixes the problem is the best approach.

Sometimes update troubleshooting requires more advanced steps. Using DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) to repair the Windows image can fix update problems. Commands like DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth check and repair system files. Also, checking for corrupt files with sfc /scannow is important. If system files are corrupt, updates will fail.
