How do you discover new music in 2025?

The algorithms on streaming platforms are getting better but they still tend to recommend the same type of stuff. I'm looking for more creative ways to discover new music beyond just Spotify's Discover Weekly. What methods or platforms are you using to find fresh sounds and artists you wouldn't normally encounter?

To discover new music beyond algorithms, I follow a bunch of music blogs and YouTube channels that focus on specific genres. Channels like The Sound You Need" and "MrSuicideSheep" consistently introduce me to artists I wouldn't find otherwise. It's more work than just letting Spotify recommend stuff, but the payoff is much better.

I use Bandcamp a lot to discover new music. The tagging system is really good for finding obscure genres, and you can see what other people who bought an album also purchased. It's a more human centered way to discover new music compared to algorithm driven platforms. Plus, more money goes directly to the artists.

One of my favorite ways to discover new music is through movie and TV show soundtracks. You'd be surprised how many amazing artists get featured in indie films or streaming series. I've found some of my favorite musicians through credits scenes. It's a more organic way to encounter music in context.

I follow specific producers and musicians on social media to discover new music. They often share what they're listening to or working on, which leads me down interesting rabbit holes. It's like having a personal curator who actually knows music theory and production, not just an algorithm optimizing for engagement.

I attend local shows and open mics to discover new music. There's nothing like hearing an artist live before they have any recorded material. You get to witness the raw talent before production polish. Plus, you're supporting the local music scene which is always important.
