How do you create beautiful DIY terrariums that thrive?

I love the look of DIY terrariums but every time I make one, the plants die within a few weeks. What am I doing wrong? What plants work best in closed vs open terrariums? What about soil layers and drainage? I want to create DIY terrariums that are both beautiful and sustainable. Any tips for selecting plants and maintaining the right environment?
