How do I tell if my side project has real business viability or just a hobby?
#1
I’ve been running my side project for about six months now, and while I have a small group of users who seem to really like it, I’m honestly stuck on how to tell if there’s a real business here or if I’m just building a nice hobby. My gut says to push forward, but I keep wondering if I’m missing a clear signal that it’s actually viable.

I hear you the pull to push forward is real a small loyal group after six months feels like something tangible traction is clearly there even if the money isnt showing it a tiny paid pilot could reveal the path

From a numbers mind look at traction indicators not feelings what signals would tell you this scales What is the current CAC and LTV can you run a simple paid trial and keep it under a fixed budget If the paid users cover costs and you can grow without burning out you are closer to viability

Maybe you are chasing a concept that is bigger than your current product It could be that the value is in the practice of building not the income Or maybe your users want fewer features hence the stickiness is not about revenue

Im skeptical that any signal finally lands without a clear market need If your idea keeps pleasing a niche it may stay a hobby by design Without a real demand spike you might be framing viability wrong

Consider reframing the question What if the win is learning how to ship fast rather than immediate profits The traction you have now could be a platform for future transitions like services or partnerships

Think of it like a story of a product You want the reader to keep returning not by pity but by the promise of small improvements every story beat The audience helps decide the arc

One more angle If you drop a tiny feature and see who sticks you may understand the core obsession of the users without second guessing
